This is "a friend": A silly little INIT that simulates someone
typing friendly messages, complete with typing sounds. It gets very
annoying after a while, and could be used to play a joke on someone.
That's what I used it for, at least. All the settings are configurable
with ResEdit.

Subject: [*] ChangeCase XFCN 1.1
BreakName 1.1 is a HyperCard XFCN designed to quickly separate a full file
name into its components. To install it, use a program like ResEdit to copy
the BreakName XFCN resource from this stack and paste it into any HyperCard
stack
you wish to access it from. If you wish to use this XFCN in a number of
stacks, just install it in your Home stack.
Many Macintosh users never see a 'raw' file name, but if you delve into
file manipulation in HyperCard you will become painfully familiar with them.
To see the hidden part of a file name, select a file in Finder and choose "Get
Info" from the File menu. The hidden part of the name appears on the line
labelled 'where'. It is usually a rather long chunk of text that contains the
name of every folder you have to open to get to the desired file.
The only parameter BreakName requires is a text string, presumably the
name of a file from which you want to extract the path or actual file name.
The result of its calculations is a text string containing just the file's
actual name. Optionally you can specify just the part you require ("Volume",
"Path", "Folder", or "File"), and the path separators in case you are using
some future version of the Mac O/S that uses different path separators (or
perhaps A/UX).
A special case is made to properly deal with the string returned by
HyperCard's "long name of this stack" function, which is of the form <Stack
"Hard Drive:Any Old Stack">. This special case may not work with non-English
versions of HyperCard.
Syntax: BreakName(FileName,<Part>,<Separator>)
The BreakName XFCN is copyright Ben Lawson 1993. It has been released as
freeware, meaning that you are free to make any use of it you desire but that
I retain all ownership of it. Please do not distribute it in modified form or
without this documentation. BreakName is released as-is, and I take no
responsibility for any damage that might arise from it's use. Use it at your
own risk!
The following text is a BinHexed StuffIt archive of a HyperCard 2.1 stack,
so you'll have to extract it twice...

Subject: [*] Extension Manager 2.0.sit.hqx
Extensions Manager 2.0
Extensions Manager is (C) Copyright 1990-93 Apple Computer, Inc. All Rights
Reserved. By Ricardo Batista. Central Software Group, MSD.
Extensions Manager and EM Extension are free software and can be distributed
freely by individuals. For Commercial distribution or bulletin board
distribution please contact Apple Software Licensing.
EM is distributed "As is" and unsupported by Apple. Please don't call
Apple for technical support.
Extensions Manager allows you turn "off" or "on" the code that executes
at startup in certain "extension documents" such as Control Panels,
Chooser devices and INITs (known before as startup documents). It also
allows you to choose which font files should be opened under System 7.1
EM is also PowerBook aware, a couple of features are specially useful to
PowerBook users.
With System 7.x there are a few folders where system extensions can be
located, therefore the old style "INIT Managers" do not work well.
%% What is NEW in 2.0
1) Finally, use an international routine for sorting the extension names.
2) Show folder names in the extension list for reference.
3) When a duplicate file is found, give the option to delete the unwanted
target file.
4) Include the Fonts folder from 7.1
5) Allow for keyboard selection of extension names. When you type a key, EM
finds the first extension that starts with that letter. If you type
the key again EM skips to next folder and finds the first file or folder
name that begins with that letter and so on...
6) Two new options specially useful for PowerBook users:
a) Give the option to always come up at startup.
b) Optionally enable or disable a set called "Network" based on
the state of the network. When this option is enabled and the network
is available, enable those extensions in the set. If the network is
not available then EM disables those extensions. You must first create
a set called "Network" for this function to work.

HexEdit is a hexdump viewer and editor that works similarly to the hex
editor provided with Apple's ResEdit. It allows you to edit either
the data fork or the resource fork of a file.
I wrote HexEdit because I needed to be able to insert/delete bytes

Item Subject: /.../0000069
Subject: Icons for customizing the representation of folders.
The following archive will interest those who like to customize their desktop
under System 7 and have Resedit. They will have a lot of icons to play with in
a format that could be used rapidly.
With the commercial program IconMover 3.0 from CE Software, sold with Calendar
Maker 3.0, it's possible to easily scrounge icons from any standard
applications and files or to create them from scratch. These icons can be
stored in a template containing up to 24 different ones.
Open the templates included with Resedit. They have only the resource ICON, so
you can't miss it. You double-click on that resource, then on the icon you
want, modify it if you desire, select it as a picture with the tool designed
for that, the same way it's done in any paint program, go to the Finder
without quitting Resedit and paste it to replace the standard representation
of any folders, like explained in the documentation that comes with System 7.
If you paste the icon of a program over the folders in which it's stored, you
will have no way to differentiate them. With Resedit, you can add a dot to the
icon of a folder to differentiate the folder from the program. With folders in
which you have only files, you don't have that problem.
I tried pasting directly the icons from IconMover to the folders, but they
were not stable, so after experimenting I used the way described above. I
don't make any promise, but it worked perfectly for me.

A piece of mail from the publisher of the Electronic American Heritage

If you are one such soul, are you generally satisfied with it? How would
you rate the Roget Thesaurus and Word Hunter functions? If you happen to
use Word 5.x and its dictionary and thesaurus (either the standard

The leaflet isn't too clear about the way it works on a Mac. Is it easily

Powerless lets you schedule automatic, unattended system shutdowns. This
allows you
to leave your computer running so that it can complete a task, then shut
off after
a period of time you specify.
o It's an application, not an INIT
o Works on any Macintosh with System 7
o Small and efficient (less than 20K on disk)
o Cool 3-D color interface (supports B/W Mac's, too)
o Uses internationally-recognized icons
o Displays time in 12 hour or 24 hour format
o Displays time relative to the present time
o Notifies you 5 minutes before shutdown
o Beeps during the final 10 seconds for additional warning
o Remembers your desired display mode and time settings

However more and more people are now switching to Ethertalk, so I will need to

Hi netters,
I have been wondering for some time whether there exists
any program that sort of synchronizes two documents. As a translator
I very often need to find the same place in two or more documents.
Of course I could use Word and mark corresponding parts of the

it was possible to scroll two documents correlatively by using som
add-on-software for Word.
Having a slight idea about the variety of software in the public domain

knowledge to write the software. I would appreciate some hints and
also I would love to hear about software that might be of use for
translators, not necessarily translating software (machine

Subject: Crashing on Shutdown--OUCH!!
Since I switched to 32-bit addressing, my computer started crashing at
the end of the Shutdown process, failing to unmount the startup drive
(I could not Restart from it). It says Type 41 "Finder" error (can't load
the Finder) but that doesn't make sense. In fact, after reinstalling a
clean system (new Sys Folder created from scratch), keeping all foreign
inits out and going back to 24-bit addressing, the crash happens on
Shutdown IF the Sytem 7 Tuner is loaded AND my exteral hard drive has
been mounted.
There is no crash if I startup with the Shift key down (Tuner not
loaded), nor if I don't mount the external drive at all. Nor does it
crash if I startup FROM the external hard drive, which is the only way I
can recover from the crash (since the internal HD becomes unrecognized
unless I do a cold boot). So, I figure the problem is some interaction
betweeen the disk driver software of my internal startup drive, the
driver software of the external drive and the Sytem 7 tuner, since all
three have to be present in order to cause the crash on shutdown.
Again, this problem was nonexistent for months before I upgraded my RAM
and went to 32-bit, but now it's happening under 24-bit mode. And, my
computer ran fine with my couple-dozen usual extensions but crashed only
at the end of Shutdown.I've been pulling my hair out troubleshooting this
one and it's taken a long time to track down. If you have any idea what's
going on here, please respond!
I'm running a Quadra 700 with Sytem 7.0.1/1.1.1, internal Maxtor 340MB
drive formatted with StorWare software (came with it), external Quantum
127MB drive/APS Power Tools formatting (came with it).

Karina Davison ask how to prevent changes in the AppleTalk setups.
As this is the second question on this theme I post the answer to I-M.
The trick is simple. You set up each computer for connecting to the server
as you want it to. Then you protect the file AppleShare prep in the system
folder and make it read-only. Any changes will not be saved, and the next
logon will be as YOU set it. This file modifies itself when logon
parameters are changed, and making it "protected" causes some error
messages (but no harm) when someone tries to change the settings.
Hope this helps

The easiest solution to protect the innocent user is to locate the

You are aware of the fact that FMP can spot duplicates by performing a
find command and using a !-sign as parameter? So as I see your
situation you have to import one file into the other and perform this
find-command in the field in question and then delete the duplicates.

EDHOLZER@delphi.com writes with two problems:
> 1- ALTERNATE PAGE PRINTING --does anyone know if FileMaker Pro is
> capable of printing alternate pages so that I can use both sides of a
> page to save on bulk?
No. There is no command for "odd pages only" or "even pages only." (It
was not so long ago that some Mac wordprocessors got this capability.)
The only workaround I can think of works as follows. Say you have a
report that you have perused in FileMaker Pro's Preview mode, so you
know that it's ten pages long. Print page 1 only (define the print range
as from p. 1 to p. 1). Then print page 3 only, then page 5 only, &c., up
to p. 9. If you are using Print Monitor or some other spooler, you can
queue these up pretty easily. When those five pages are done printing,
turn the paper over and repeat the process for the even-numbered pages.
If you are producing really large reports and this workaround is simply
unacceptable, you should probably look into taking advantage of some of
FileMaker Pro's excellent data-export options. You may be able to export
your data to Word, or Excel, or some other program that will give you
more flexibility printing.
> 2- DUPLICATE ELIMINATION -- Is it possible to merge two large and
> almost identical files and wind up with one file containing ALL
> unduplicated entries and NO duplicates?
Well, yes, except that you have to remember that FileMaker Pro is not
designed to make your decisions for you: that is, what you consider a
duplicate might not be an exact duplicate to FM Pro. Try this, though:
1. Create a clone of one of the databases (using the "save as..."
command), i.e. a database with the same data structure but no records.
2. Open the clone and import into it all the records from BOTH of the
source databases. Make sure that you match the fields of the source file
with the clone correctly (so you don't end up with street addresses in
the last name field).
3. To find duplicate records, enter Find mode, and put an exclamation
point in EVERY field, or at least in every field that matters to you. FM
Pro does not find duplicate records: it finds records with duplicate
values in particular fields. Perform the find.
4. It will be necessary at this point to browse through the found
set--which will NOT include any unique records--and make sure the
duplicates are exact. In my experience, if I have used both databases at
all, duplicates are not always exact. I may have two records for John
Doe, with same address & phone, but one includes John's wife's name,
while the other does not.
5. This is where it can get tricky. Simple scenario first. If you KNEW
POSITIVELY ABSOLUTELY that all duplicates were exact AND that duplicates
came only in pairs--that is, that you didn't have any cases where there
were >three< identical records--you could write a simple script that
would do the following:
* start are record 1 & omit it. This makes record 2 the current
record.
* go to next record (the original record 3).
Simply repeat this process until you get to the end of the found set,
then delete the found set, which should contain only the un-omitted
dup's.
However, if you can't be sure the records are exact duplicates OR that
the dup's only come in pairs, then you will have to browse through all
the duplicates "manually" and omit the ones you want to keep. THEN
delete the found set.
If you screw up, you still have your original source files.
MORAL: DON'T ALLOW DUPLICATE DATABASES TO BE SPAWNED!

Thanks. As its author, I can't see any magic in it. :-)
However, let me mention a real charm in the same source toward the
same goal: easy management of large quantities of text. Yes, I'm
talking about Zimmermann's "Free Text Browser", a wonderful tool
for indexing/browsing. It's free in both senses.
In the 'digest' folder, you will find a 32 Mbyte file that contains
_all_ of Info-Mac and csmp digests, as well as TidBITS and
Vaporware. Also included on the CD, are two large files (close to
the text itself in size) that contain the indexes. The rest is
easy: just open the browser stack, and open the large text in it.
Then you will see _all_ the occurrences of _all_ words in two
separate lists. There are 5.5 million words altogether. Including
numbers, spelling errors, and everything.
You can search for your name and see how many times you have been
mentioned in these documents.
At first, I did not think such a speed could be achieved with
HyperCard. On close inspection, I notice that the hard work is
done by XFCN's and HC is just the interface.
Good work. At least, I have a good reason now why I decided to call
the Easy View 2.3 documents "views", rather than "indexes".

Just to pick details - Excel didn't come along for a few years. The first
spreadsheet from Microsoft was Multiplan. They also had a separate little
number called Chart that drew graphs. Most likely they got the idea for Excel
by combining the two together.

Well, it's probably time for you to get off the fence. Word is almost
garanteed to be incompatible with any new software it is supposed to
cooperate with. In this case software in question is your spanking new
Stylewriter II driver.
There might be a way out, but I wouldn't call it that. The old old
Stylewriter driver used to be compatible with the Word 4. I don't remember
the version number, but it's the one before system 7.01 tuner package was
released. Of course, your printer will slow down, you will lose the grays,
and the driver might not work at all. But - for the love of the Word...

Back when MS first introduced reconfigurable menus (in 1985), there
was some debate why MENU resources weren't used (which meant that the
menus couldn't be edited in ResEdit). In response, MS claimed that
they could only offer reconfigurable menus using their own code. I
have no reason to think they were lying.
> As far as I know, there are no Apple guidelines which

Neither of us has much expertese in the details of this. There are a
lot of practical details which can make things seem more difficult than
you might think -- for example, it might be too slow to dynamically create
menus using the toolbox routines.
Most Mac apps with changable menus I have seen actually contain fully
defined menus for each of the possible variations, and switch among
them. I don't think MS had this option, as their approach was too
flexible -- you can place any command on any menu, for example.

Isn't that a good reason to ask before auto-saving? Another reason
would be to warn the user that the computer is about to do something
unexpected. Saving a large file generally makes the Mac "pause" for
a second or two, and this could be disconcerting if it happened while
you were merrily typing away.

Can someone confirm the difference in display size? I was under the
impression that the display size was exactly the same. I thought only
the 180c had the 640x480 display.
Also, one of the cons of the 145B is that there is no option for an FPU.
This was available with the 145. Based on all the flames about the
Centris 610, this would seem to be important. ;-)

I'm looking for advice on upgrading. Currently I'm running a Mac Plus,
with 1mb ram, and an external hard-drive. This has been adequate for my
puproses through college. But now I'm going to be starting my thesis, and
I think its time I moved up to something more reliable, that can run some
of the software my Mac Plus only dreams about. The two machines I'm
thinking about very seriously are:
* A Powerbook 180 : for portability (obviously), but will apple
produce a superior machine within months of
my purchase? And it is a 68030 based machine.
* A Centris 610: ok, I'm giving up portability (which I really
like),
but it's a 68040 based machine, and I've heard it
will be upgradeable when the next generation apple
machine comes out next year.
* My other problem is our department is running IBM clones. If I go to a PC,
I'd be compatible with those machines. How much could programs like softPC
help that situation?
I'd appreciate any and all advice...

After trying every trick in the book to eliminate a recurring system error
on my PB 100 I decided to re-install the system software only to find that,
midway through the installation procedure, the installation was stopped
owing to a "disk error". I tried it a second time and the same thing
occurred.
Running MacTools, Norton Disk Doctor and Apple Disk Tools all reported no
problems. The system error I was trying to eliminate involved WhiteKnight.
When I gave the quit command the program quit OK but was immediately
followed by the message " application unknown has unexpectedly quit because
a type 2 error occurred".
My questions are:
1. Why can't I reinstall the system software and what can I do to remedy
this?
2. What is a "type 2" error?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I am by the way, running system 7.01 on a PB 100 4/40 with AutoDoubler.

Subject: Using Time in Excel 4.0...
Ok all you lovers of Micro$oft, help me out of this one:
It seems that NO MATTER WHAT I do, if I have a colon (:) in a cell with
numbers, XL assumes it's a "time" if the number is less than 24 (e.g., 14:30
is assumed to be 2:30 in the afternoon on Jan 1, 1904 REGARDLESS of what you
use to display the number in the Format menu using Number..., whereas 25:00 is
assumed to be text and there's NO changing it to ANYTHING else [at least as
far as I can tell]).
Now it turns out that this is MOST inconvenient for me. I'm trying to make a
time card in XL and I have thus far found it easiest to convert all Hours:
minutes into minutes (somewhere many away columns off screen) to do the math,
since I have to add up the total number of hours:minutes worked each week and
this number is way over 24 (since I work more than 3 8-hour days a week ;-).
The only solution I've found is to take the total number of minutes in a week,
calculate how many hours and minutes it is and concatinate the two numbers
with a colon in between and let it be text.
The obvious question is:
is it possible to use a format where you can have hours > 24 (e.g., hhh:mm or
36:25 which is 1 day 12 hours and 25 minutes but calculated in
hours:minutes)??
I don't enjoy having to resort to text, but if that's the only solution...
The same question goes for entering NEGATIVE times (WHY?? would I do this?-
well there's a column for paid overtime- if I'm paid for the time I need to
subtract these hours from my weekly total). As far as I can tell, XL will
calculate and display a negative time (subtract one cell from another and if
the second one is larger, the result will be negative and displayed), but it
won't let you enter a negative time (e.g., -4:40).
MUCH thanks in advance for anyone who can help...

Wrong. "Modern" file systems like the Mac do NOT explicitly store
a character in the file to indicate EOF. This was only done on some
very primitive file systems, like DOS.
